Since upgrading to OS X 10.10 (Yosemite), I have been been experiencing
intermittent screen flickering problems with Cocoa Emacs 24.4
pre-test/RC1 (the issue did not occur in OS X 10.9 to my knowledge). In
general, the screen flickers in the top middle portion when switching
between windows or when switching buffers in a window (a video of the
issue can be found at
https://www.dropbox.com/s/9orcw95yru4p7jy/emacs-bug.mov?dl=0 ). I was
able to reproduce using emacs -Q in a cocoa window; I don't have exact
reproduction steps, since the bug seems quite non-deterministic, but
with a combination of screen splitting, switching to full screen
(although it is visible in non-full-screen mode as well), filling a
buffer with text (to make the flicker more visible), and switching
windows, the flicker becomes apparent.

Once the flicker starts, does it stop on its own, or does it continue

It flickers once per window/buffer switch (it doesn't flicker when
typing within a buffer), and it continues indefinitely.

And you are saying that the same pretest didn't exhibit such behavior
on the older OS version?  In that case, I guess there's some X event
that the new OS sends to Emacs that causes these redraws.  Perhaps Jan
could chime in and suggest some way of investigating this.

Yes, that's correct--it happens with 24.4 RC1 (and an older pretest) on
OS X 10.10, but not on OS X 10.9, and it also doesn't happen with 24.3
on OS X 10.10. (I've only seen the issue with Cocoa; it doesn't appear
to happen running in terminal mode.)

I can see a bit of flicker in the top line, but is just flickers once, not repeatedly.
It seems to be related to scrollbars.  If I disable scroll bars, the flicker does not happen.
Do you see that?

Just confirmed that disabling the scroll bar makes it go away. The flicker is
pretty hard to see with the default theme; it looks much worse with
high-contrast themes. It's always just one flicker per window switch--is that
you're seeing?

I've been seeing this for a while now, but I didn't correlate it with
10.10. I've been running 10.10 since the betas along with the Emacs
pretests (and now the 24.4 release).

For me, the glitch happens on "C-x b" but not on "C-x o". But it looks
just like the movie, with a narrow vertical flash in middle area of the
window.
