Summary: I want the Info buffer to be colorized, so that I have enough
visual clues to skim it quickly. I find the Emacs provided default VERY
disconcerting.

1. Recommend that newer Emacs be compiled with texinfo-5. (Please
ignore, if such recommendation already exists) If newer Emacs is
compiled with texinfo-4 then above font lock settings wouldn't kick
in at all.

| curly quotes. The current code recognizes the curly quotes because that
| can be done much more reliably, whereas trying to highlight `...' is
| fraught with too many risks of either false positives or false negatives.

2. Change the default value of Info-quoted in following ways:
a) __inherit__ from a face like `font-lock-function-name-face'.
b) Reconsider the use of courier family. When there is surfeit of
courier faces, I find that the Info buffer visually disconcerting. I
__guess__ that the courier face used is Courier 10 Pitch. See output
of 'fc-list :family' at the end of the mail.

FWIW/FYI -
Since 1996, my code (info+.el [1]) does this. (I offered this
several times to Emacs, but there was no interest.) By default,
the highlighting is turned on and is noticeable. The face I use
for this is named `info-quoted-name' (lowercase).
Similarly, double-quoted text ("...") is highlighted with face
`info-string'; angle-bracketed text (<...>) is highlighted with
face `info-quoted-name' (i.e., same as `...'); and isolated
single-quote marks (') are highlighted with face `info-single-quote'.
Each such highlighting is optional, controlled by a user option,
and can be toggled on/off anytime.

Wrt using ‘...’ instead of `...', by default: I disagree.
I think this is a *bad* convention - misguided.
The use of `...' is *not* quotation in the ordinary sense, and
no ordinary quotation convention should be used for it, as that
introduces confusion with normal text quoting (not to mention
difficulties for using ordinary keyboards, searching, etc.).
Emacs uses `...' to set off *inline code*. In other documentation
contexts this is more typically handled by markup tags such as
<code> or <CodeInline>. And it is typically rendered using a
different font (usually monospaced, since the surrounding doc
context is usually not monospaced).
Emacs needs something that, just like what is used by other doc
systems, is not confusable with ordinary text quotation. But
Emacs also needs something that is easy to type and search for
directly in the "rendered" output. For the latter reason,
ordinary markup is not the best approach.
The use of `...' for inline code by Emacs is in fact an elegant,
clever, and handy invention.
It is unfortunate that Emacs (and TexInfo) has now gone down a
rabbit hole in the direction of using curly quotes for inline
code. That some find `...' ugly or old-fashioned seems to have
trumped the good sense that is behind its design.
You will find curly quotes used everywhere in the wider world.
And I'm all in favor of it! What you will *NOT* find is curly
quotes being used to designate inline code, i.e., to distinguish
it from surrounding ordinary text. It is *that* use of curly
quotes that I think is misguided.
`...' for inline code should in fact be something for Emacs to
be proud of, not something to toss in the cellar or to paper
over.
Just one opinion. Check back in another 20 years...

IIUC many people prefer the other option. Like all bikeshedding
subjects, this is a very hot topic, so I think we're better off keeping
away from this and let people use whatever they prefer.
But, AFAIK, it takes special efforts to keep using Texinfo-4. And for
example, the manuals of `emacs24' in Debian have been generated with
Texinfo-5, so I think it's already the case that Texinfo-5 is what is
used by default.

As explained earlier, the use of "courier" is intended to match the
`verbatim' environment style of LaTeX with a "teletype-style" font.

It looks OK to me, except for the fact that it seems to be using
a courier font that is not anti-aliased (i.e. it's probably a bitmap font).
Do you have another monospaced font with serifs on your system that you
could recommend instead?

I find such coloring jarring, but it's probably just me. So if you can

Emacs picks up `adobe-courier-medium' (an x font) for the courier
family. Surprisingly, this font doesn't turn up in the GTK menu and
it confused me.
So, I cooked up the attached font-family.el to examine the various
fonts that Emacs recognizes. Here is how you use it:
1. M-x load-library font-family.el
2. M-x list-font-families
3. RET to set the frame font
4. x to change the displayed string
(Do you think above the file will be useful to a larger audience?)
There are couple of issues that I ran in to wrt `font-family-list':
1. GUI dialog doesn't display 'X' fonts (that Emacs falls back upon)
2. (font-family-list) returns "nil".
3. (font-family-list) returns duplicate family names.
4. (delete-dups (font-family-list)) STILL has duplicate entries.

Drew wants coloration. IMNSHO, Choosing Blue as the effective may not
be problematic.

Right, that's why it's not anti-aliased.

The Gtk font dialog doesn't know abut Emacs's own font handling.
It offers a similar set of fonts, but not quite the same, indeed.
I don't think we can realistically fix this, sadly.

It sounds at least like a good candidate for GNU ELPA.

I think this is because duplicates are not removed between different
font backends. I can't see any reason why that can't be fixed easily.
