Message #5 received at submit <at> debbugs.gnu.org (full text, mbox):
Based on the buffer names, the message should say:
"Computing differences between foo.el and foo.el<2> ..."

Mine says "Computing differences between ediff8521EBL and ediff8521RLR
..." when I run it on two random non-saved buffers.
"Computing differences between files.el and ChangeLog ..." when running
on two saved buffers.
But, yeah, it would make more sense if it gave the buffer names instead
of the temporary file names in this scenario, I guess.

I think the proper solution here is just to remove the messaging --
which is misleading when you're comparing unsaved buffers, and pretty
pointless otherwise. So I've now done this in Emacs 28.
