How to reproduce:

- emacs -q
- Choose any color theme with dark background: (load-theme 'tango-dark t)
- Download or open image at this url: http://www.openldap.org/doc/admin23/intro_tree.gif

Result: The image is deformed. Background becomes very dark, the nodes become gray. This is not expected.

I don't see why you think this is a bug.  The image is transparent, so
the background will show through.

Well, normal browsers do display it in a viewable way. Is it possible to
display transparent background as white background? Otherwise, it is
problematic for browsing the web with dark colour themes.

This is a well-known optical illusion: the same gray shade looks more
bright on a darker background.  If you use some tool that shows color
pixels at certain screen location, you will see that the pixels are
exactly identical to what you get on the default (light) background.

There's no bug here.

I think viewing transparent gif image currently in Emacs is fine as it is,
since the example image should be used in a light background to view its
content. What I meant is about fixing Eww, since I encountered this issue
in it. I think at least Eww background should be defaulted to white, not
the background color of the current color theme. The default background
color for a web browser is also white if no background color is defined in
css. It would help in viewing many plain text web pages with transparent
images.

Actually, Iceweasel's default background can be customized (you rarely
see it since most webpages override the default, but for example
http://www.iro.umontreal.ca/~monnier/ uses the default).  Yet I just
tried to view http://www.openldap.org/doc/admin23/intro_tree.gif in my
Iceweasel and it doesn't use my customized default background color.
So, indeed, it looks like Iceweasel's default gif background can't
be customized.

It's true that traditionally web browsers have defaulted to a light
background, but that's kinda changing now with the popularity of "dark"
themes.

But in any case, I think eww should default to the background colour the
user has chosen, so I don't think there's any bug here to be fixed.
