I think that because test-loose-ends is built with libtool, the right
incantation here is:

"libtool --mode=execute gdb test-loose-ends"

Would you mind doing that?  Then we might have a proper backtrace :)
You probably have to run that within the equivalent of:

    srcdir="$(srcdir)"						\
