The eieio.el library has this in it:
(cl-defgeneric eieio-object-name-string (obj)
"Return a string which is OBJ's name."
(declare (obsolete eieio-named "25.1")))
But if you go to the eieio-named class, in eieio-base.el, it works by
defining a method called... `eieio-object-name-string'.
Ie, if you use the recommended new method, you end up calling the old,
obsoleted method again.
Not a huge disaster, but a strange inconsistency.
