Modeline '{35 more}' never updated when reading digests

C-d runs the command gnus-summary-enter-digest-group.

It is great, except the {xx more} in the Modeline,
-UUU:----Gnus: nndoc:nnml:mail.misc-18119 [15] {35 more}   31% of 3.2k L15    (Summary) -----------
is never updated. We might be on the 33rd article,
but instead of {2 more} it still says {35 more}.

Gnus v5.13

I'm unable to reproduce this bug -- the "xx more" counts down for me in
any group.  Do you have any customisations of the mode line?

The [15] above becomes [16], [17], ...
but the xx more never increments, digest or not.

Oh, so it's not just about digests?  Then it's definitely something in
your customisations.

gnus-summary-mode-line-format is a variable defined in ‘gnus-sum.el’.
Documentation: ...
%Z  A string with unread/unselected article counts

Add:
%Z is only decremented by "E", ... , SPC or n will NOT decrement it.

In fact say also:
%Z  "{ num more}" with num unread/unselected article counts

It's decremented no matter what command that decreases the unread count.

You should go through your customisations and try to determine what's
making this misbehave for you.  I suspect you've somehow switched
modeline updates off in some circumstances.

It's working fine.

The problem is let's say there is a group full of messages that we have
already read 100 times.

When we see the word "more" we think it is helping us know how many are
left below the current article, so we know if there are 100 or 1000
remaining below the screen.

So maybe change the word "more" into "total" or just remove it.

Or add a new "below" word, "234 below".

No, it says that there are "4 more" unread articles.  There's other
things in the mode line that displays line numbers and the like.
