Pretty sure we're not quite ready for a release, but there
have been enough changes that it's worth another snapshot.

Here's the most recent NEWS addition:

Commands implemented via shell scripts are now more consistent about
failure status. For example, 'gunzip --help >/dev/full' now
consistently exits with status 1 (error), instead of with status 2
(warning) on some platforms. [bug present since the beginning]

Changes in gzip since 1.8.40-9dff:

Jim Meyering (4):
zless, znew: exit 1 upon --help or --version write failure
build: make each generated script unwritable
gzexe: work even without the ability to make a hard link
      build: update gnulib to latest

Paul Eggert (3):
build: update gnulib submodule to latest
tests: don’t be so strict about timestamps
      maint: script diagnostics status cleanup

Perhaps this is overkill, but how about the attached followup patch for that
gzexe problem with filesystems that do not support symlinks? The idea is to use
a variant of Bruno's suggestion that the file should always exist.
