Message #5 received at submit <at> debbugs.gnu.org (full text, mbox):
Hello,
I've installed LibreOffice but it always crashes when clicking on the 'Open
File' button (or File -> Open) with the error:
$ libreoffice
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
** (soffice:16241): WARNING **: Error retrieving accessibility bus address: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.a11y.Bus was not provided by any .service files
(soffice:16241): Gtk-WARNING **: Could not find the icon 'list-remove-symbolic-ltr'. The 'hicolor' theme
was not found either, perhaps you need to install it.
You can get a copy from:
http://icon-theme.freedesktop.org/releases
(soffice:16241): GLib-GIO-ERROR **: Settings schema
'org.gtk.Settings.FileChooser' is not installed
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
Workaround found: As recommended by Ricardo on #guix, I've tried the
following:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
export GSETTINGS_SCHEMA_DIR=/gnu/store/0wq9xddbgv3y959dhk0njasbi8zr4d8a-gtk+-3.22.21/share/glib-2.0/schemas
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
And it resolved the problem. Should we be wrapping our libreoffice
launch scripts with this environment variable, like we do for our utox
and wxmaxima packages?
For reference, the software installed in my user profile are those:

I just tried:
guix environment --ad-hoc libreoffice -- libreoffice
which at some point shows:
No schema files found: doing nothing.
and it doesn’t fix the file open dialog crash reported at
<https://bugs.gnu.org/30642>. Any idea?
Thanks,

I'm not particularly experienced with package recipes but I have a
question on this one:
Why couldn't "glib-or-gtk-build-system"[1] be used here ?
I had the same crash problem with a package I defined and use locally, and
using that build system solved it (the documentation mentions the phase
"glib-or-gtk-compile-schemas" which should take care of it).
(I tried to do this on my own, but I've never been able to build
libreoffice locally yet: it always fails at the end for some reason.)

It should work, but I think nobody has taken the time to try it yet. If
you can give it a try and report about it, we’d happily apply the patch!

You could mention <https://bugs.gnu.org/30642> in the log.
One option discussed at the time was to use ‘glib-or-gtk-build-system’,
which should have an effect similar to the patch you posted. Perhaps we
should just do that?

Nitpick: the lambda’s body is too indented. :-)
Thank you!

I tried this, and the build crashed in the
bin-and-desktop-install-phase. I'm currently rebuilding with
--keep-failed to learn more, but it takes several hours on my fastest
computer. Could I try building it on Bayfront to speed up the iteration
time?

It turned out to be completely malformed, but I've fixed it locally.

Hi all,
Though the bug is closed, I still faced this issue. Solution was to
explicitly install gtk+ along with libreoffice (ie. specify it in the
'packages' field of my home-environment declaration, in my case).
I'm not sure if this is expected or if there's any way to fix it. Just
wanted to share how I got it to work.
I should note that in order to run libreoffice even in a `guix shell`,
you need to specify gtk+, as well as coreutils and sed (for the
/bin/libreoffice startup script, I think) -
guix shell --pure coreutils sed libreoffice -- libreoffice

Argh, typo. Should have been:

Thanks for investigating. I'll either wrap or hardcode coreutils and
sed to be able to launch that properly, we can update to the next
version at the same time too.
Regarding gtk+, I don't really know if propagating it is done in such
cases. Adding a member of the gnome team for input on that subject,
@Liliana ?

Propagating gtk+ into user profiles is less than ideal. I think we
could wrap XDG_DATA_DIRS to get the schema located.

It is not really expected, and it is a know bug. It affects few more
programs. I have sent a series fixing the issue (/me checks the list of
open bugs) 1 year, 3 weeks, 2 days ago. So yes, there is a way to fix
it. :)
Have a nice day,
Tomas

Would you mind linking to it? I am unable to solve this riddle :)
I checked the issue tracker and did a 'date:400 days .. 365 days'
Notmuch search over the bug-guix and guix-patches archives, but couldn't
find your patch series.

Seems to be issue bug#68150.
I will review it today

Oh sorry about that, I should have mention right away it is #68150.
Bonus points for actually looking for it though. :)

Fair warning, I have not idea whether it even still applies cleanly. I
lost the will to push it after half a year or something.

Yes but it's trivial to fix, I'll send a rebased v3.
The packages do build, the patch series makes sense, I'll review it
LGTM for the v3.
