INFO says
   By default, ‘wc’ prints three counts: the newline, words, and byte
and wc --help even more so.

Alas man wc doesn't say if what we are looking at is bytes or
characters, so kindly mention the default on the man page!

I'm confused. It says 'bytes', and means it.
One has to specify -m to select characters.
