Subject: 12.1.2; Generation of previews fails under Windows 10
Date: Sun, 21 Apr 2019 17:25:50 +0000
Hello!

Recently, generating previews under AUCTeX started to fail. Until some months ago,
I had a working setup. The OS is Windows 10 (updated). A minimal working
example is shown below. Running LaTeX on _region_.tex works and the PDF
file produced contains the expected content. However, running gs fails
with no diagnostics.

The machine has MiKTeX's mgs and "normal" gswin64 installed. At the
Cygwin command prompt both can run the conversion successfully. MiKTeX
(64 bit version) is updated and has mgs version 9.25. Ghostscript (64
bit version) is updated and is version 9.27.

In Emacs,

   M-! mgs

and

   M-! gswin64

find mgs and gswin64 respectively as expected.

A command such as

  mgs -dDELAYSAFER -sDEVICE=png16m -dPrinter -dNOPLATFONTS
    -dTextAlphaBits=4 -dGraphicsAlphaBits=4 -o 'pic-%d.png'
    _region_.pdf

produces the expected png output file.

It looks like mgs fails to run at all despite that Emacs is able
to find mgs.exe correctly.

Any pointers?

Best regards,

Bernt

Hi Bernt,

thanks for the report. I tried your example and it works for me:

[pic-1.png (image/png, inline)]
[Message part 3 (text/plain, inline)]
It is on a Win10 box but with TeXlive installed and not MikTeX. Preview
uses in this case `rungs.exe' (TeXlive's counterpart of mgs). I've set
the variable `preview-gs-command' to gswin64c.exe and indeed it didn't
work as well. My current guess is that running `pdf2dsc ...' somehow
fails. TeXlive ships a small executable called pdf2dsc.exe which seems
to do the job. Does MikTeX comes with such a thing?

Best, Arash

Dear Arash,

Thank you for checking.

Is there a way to get additional debug output to see exactly what step fails?

Best regards,

Bernt

Hi Bernt,

the usual way is `M-x toggle-debug-on-error RET'.

Best, Arash

I think that the reason of the fail is due to, at least partially, the
log format which MiKTeX produces.

Compare the absence and presence of periods at the end of line of the
sentences "Snippet 1 {started, ended}". Preview-latex searches in the
log message, in the function `preview-parse-messages', with the
following regular expression, which requires the period at the end of
line:
\\(?:Preview\\|Package Preview Error\\): Snippet \\([---0-9]+\\) \\(started\\|ended\\(\
\\.? *(\\([---0-9]+\\)\\+\\([---0-9]+\\)x\\([---0-9]+\\))\\)?\\)\\."

In addition, Bernt's log lacks the information where to put the image in
the latex document buffer, which is embedded in my log as the line
l.6 \begin{displaymath}

Due to these two, at least, reasons, preview-latex cannot pick up
necessary information from the log messages. I guess that MikTeX
costomizes the log output format of latex. If this guess is correct, it
would necessary for MikTeX to discard that customize in order to use
preview-latex with MikTeX.

Best regards,
Ikumi Keita

Hi,

Emacs debugger outputs:

Debugger entered--Lisp error: (error "LaTeX found no preview images")
signal(error ("LaTeX found no preview images"))
  preview-reraise-error(#<process Preview-LaTeX>)
  preview-TeX-inline-sentinel(#<process Preview-LaTeX> "Preview-LaTeX")
  TeX-command-sentinel(#<process Preview-LaTeX> "exited abnormally with code 1\n")

which doesn't help.

Should this feature be reported to the MiKTeX author as a bug, or should it be handled by modifying the relevant patterns in AUCTeX?

Best regards,

Bernt

Hi Bernt,

If my guess is correct, the simplest solution is to remove the MiKTeX
customize on the output format of latex log. So I think that it would
be worth asking the MiKTeX author to do so.
However, I'm not 100% sure this is a bug of MiKTeX because the MiKTeX
author may have some good reason to customize the log format in such a
way. In that case, solving this problem would not be so easy.
It requires that someone fluent at LaTeX programming in TeX language
(absolutely I'm not) revises preview.dtx so that the generated
preview.sty can output the necessary information even used under MiKTeX,
in order to use preview-latex in MiKTeX.

Just modifying the regular expression, discussed below, on AUCTeX side
helps almost nothing, because it doesn't make MiKTeX to output the key
ingredients like
l.6 \begin{displaymath}
which preview-latex needs in order to locate the position in the latex
document buffer to put the generated image.

Best regards,
Ikumi Keita

For what it's worth, activating the error reporting option (discussed at https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/124246/uninformative-error-message-when-using-auctex/124259#124259) in MiKTeX does not fix the problem

initexmf.exe --set-config-value="[TeXandFriends]CStyleErrors=t"

I'm not sure, doing so even has any effect.

Maybe even simpler "solution" might be to switch from MiKTeX to
TeXLive...

(I'm going through old bug reports that unfortunately weren't resolved
at the time.)

Since we're dealing with non-standard messages (sort of) specific to
MikTeX, I'd say this "wontfix". Therefore, I'm closing this report.

Best, Arash
