I am also using ghub and have the same symptoms described in
https://github.com/magit/ghub/issues/81

I cannot reproduce with the repro in
https://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/bugreport.cgi?bug=34341#19

So, I'm afraid I don't have a simple repro. I have libgnutls version
30607 and macOS Mojave 10.14.5

Disabling TLS 1.3 via (setq ghub-use-workaround-for-emacs-bug 'force)
works around the issue for me, so it does appear to be a very
similar/same issue, but the fix applied does not fix it for macOS.

this (but I donʼt use ghub). Can you try (from emacs -Q)

M-x eww RET www.gmail.com

That fails for me with e87e6a24c49542111e669b7d0f1a412024663f8e
reverted, and works with the latest emacs master.

This works for me. I only get the error while creating a pull request,
so perhaps it is limited to POST requests?

Try this in emacs -Q:

(let (
      ;; (gnutls-algorithm-priority "NORMAL:-VERS-TLS1.3")
      (url-request-method "POST")
      (url-request-data "{}")
      (url-request-extra-headers '(("Authorization" . "token XXX")
                                   ("Content-Type" . "application/json"))))
  (switch-to-buffer
   (url-retrieve
    "https://api.github.com/repos/facebook/react/pulls"
    (lambda (status)
      (error "Staus: %S" status)))))

For me, I get a blank buffer and then a connection error.

If I uncomment the gnutls-algorithm-priority, it works as expected (it
should 401 because of the invalid token). Like the other bug, once the
connection is established once, setting gnutls-algorithm-priority or
not makes no difference.

And that recipe works fine for me. Iʼll have to try again later today
when I can use a different network that I have more control over.

One last thought: are you connecting over IPv4 or IPv6? (Iʼm currently
on an IPv4 only network)

Same for me, IPv4 only. I just rebuilt Emacs and upgraded gnutls and I
see the same issue.

What to do with it is beyond me, but I've attached a wireshark of the
connection attempt. Hopefully it helps someone.

I can’t replicate either, although I’ve no idea what version of

Hmm. There should be a var, libgnutls-version. Mine is 30608.

Actually, now that I look at it more closely, it does fail for me
(sort of). I donʼt get a blank buffer, but I do get

error in process filter: Staus:

If I retry in the same session, then I get a 401 as expected.

Iʼll stick some debugging in gnutls.c and see what I can find.

And Iʼll note that this behaviour is not limited to macOS: I see it on
my GNU/Linux box as well.

I took a look at the packet capture as well: the remote end is tearing
down the connection, so probably Emacs is sending something thatʼs out
of spec.

And emacs-26 on macOS works correctly, so this is definitely an emacs
issue.

Do you not get a query for username and then password? I do (this is on
Arch Linux, libgnutls-version=30607), and when I C-g out it, I get
"error in process filter: Quit". So do you maybe have something killing
the query in a different way?

If I rerun the recipe in the same emacs -Q session, then I do get a
401 and a prompt. And as noted elsewhere, emacs-26 gets me a 401 and a
prompt straight away.

Hello,

npostavs on #emacs <at> freenode pointed me here.

I am running FreeBSD 12.0 and a master build from today (d5622eb from
2019-08-07) and also get: error in process sentinel: Staus: (:error
(error connection-failed "connect" :host "api.github.com" :service 443))

`list-packages' gives a similar error: error in process sentinel: Error
retrieving: https://elpa.gnu.org/packages/archive-contents (error
connection-failed "connect" :host "elpa.gnu.org" :service 443)

There seems to be a race of some kind.

On macOS 10.14 and Emacs master, NS build, `list-packages' (with only elpa.gnu.org configured) fails while fetching archive-contents asynchronously. However, running

(url-retrieve
 "https://elpa.gnu.org/packages/archive-contents"
(lambda (status) (message "callback: status = %S" status))
 nil
 'silent)

works (albeit slowly); this is (modulo the callback) what list-packages does behind the curtains. The only difference is that list-packages then immediately proceeds with some other work (package-menu--refresh). This can be simulated with

(progn
 (url-retrieve ...) ; like above
 (busy-wait 1.0)) ; busy-wait 1 s

which fails in the same way. As reported by Joseph Mingrone, the process sentinel, `url-http-async-sentinel', is called with a WHY argument of "connect", which makes little sense; if the process is still trying to connect, why is the sentinel called?

In any case, `url-http-async-sentinel' interprets the "connect" status as an error and fails, but this is just a symptom of something earlier; changing the sentinel to ignore "connect" doesn't help.

If run in a TTY (with -nw), everything works, further indicating that it's may be a problem with handling of asynchronous processes in the NS build.

However, this seems insufficient by itself: is gnutls (or TLS 1.3) really so brittle that it cannot cope with a mere delay of 1 s during the initial handshake?

More details:

* In all runs, gnutls_handshake fails when called right after the initial connect() in connect_network_socket; this is expected since the socket is nonblocking and the TCP connection hasn't been set up yet.

* In failed runs, gnutls_handshake succeeds immediately in wait_reading_process_output.

* In successful runs, gnutls_handshake initially fails (with GNUTLS_E_AGAIN) in wait_reading_process_output. Only after several tries does it return success.

I didn't make much progress beyond this point. Could someone more familiar with gnutls in Emacs help me debug it?

It no longer reproduces on macOS for me it seems, with some build of Emacs 27.

The idea that bugs might reproduce is very disturbing.
In my experience, we programmers had to reproduce them ourselves.
