Subject: evolution: involid page id error when composing emails
Date: Wed, 12 Feb 2020 17:09:33 -0900
Hi, I use evolution heavily, current 3.32.4 from Guix. I updated my
guix user packages and guix system about a week ago. When composing
emails, I occasionally see an error similar to this appear in a box
above the message composition area:

gdbus.error:org.freedesktop.dbus.error.invalidargs: invalid page id:
165

While the error is there, I cannot save the email to drafts or send it.
To resolve, I must copy the email contents to another program, then
restart evolution to create the email again. It seems to be very
random, but I'd guess it happens once about every five to ten emails I
send.

Searching the web for the error message leads to these bug reports:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1757243
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/issues/587

Apparently Evolution does not work properly with WebKitGTK 2.26.
Backporting all the upstream changes looks cumbersome, but I suppose we
could do something like this until we have GNOME 3.34:

https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/webkit2gtk3/blob/f30/f/webkit-process.patch

Thoughts? Are you able to give it a try?

Thanks,
Marius

I'm eager to give the patch a try. I've never learned yet how to add
add a source patch to a package definition, so it might take me some
time to get to it if I had no help. Is there an ETA on Gnome 3.34?

Looking at that patch code, I'm trying an experiment where I set the
environment variable mentioned:
christopher <at> eowyn ~$ WEBKIT_USE_SINGLE_WEB_PROCESS="0" evolution
This should give the same effect as the code would, unless I'm setting
the variable the wrong way. I haven't had the problem again yet, but
I've only tried it for about 20 minutes.
I'm curious also if that code would work, since it makes the assumption
the program name is "evolution", whereas ".evolution-real" is the name
of the process in Guix as listed by "ps -e".

I'm not sure if my workaround is effective or not, at least one time I
still received the page ID error:

I'm curious as I don't recall this ever happening on my home computer,
only on my work computer.

Somebody on a Gnome IRC channel said the WEBKIT_USE_SINGLE_WEB_PROCESS
variable needs to be set to 1, not to 0, so I'm giving that a try.

I'm still getting this error sometimes when using the
WEBKIT_USE_SINGLE_WEB_PROCESS=1 workaround, so it seems like there must
be something else at work. Seems to be soemthing hardware specific, as
my computer at home doesn't seem to have this problem, but it would be
nice anyway to figure out the cause of the problem, as the application
should work on any x86-64 system.

This weekend, I did receive the same error on my home PC, so it does
not appear to be a problem specific to the hardware of my work
computer. I suspect it doesn't show up as often on my home PC as I
don't do near as much email multi-tasking with that system.

Does this still occur with GNOME 3.34?

Hi, I have trouble getting upgraded to that at the moment due to
intense production use of the desktop PC right now, and also upgrading
keeps breaking my print driver which I need badly. If you'll keep the
ticket open, I'll try to get the upgrade done this week.

After updating system and user to
f51fd97ec54a98668d63c52d8a6bd75d8dc3292e, I am not able to reproduce
the problem, at least with a quick test. I send a few dozen emails a
day, so I should know within a day or two if the problem is really
gone, and will let you know if it isn't.

Gnome settings is show Gnome version 3.34.2.

I have been using evolution heavily for about two days and have not
seen the error appear again. I used to see it about 10 times a day.
