Subject: 28.0.50; too many tramp messages after computer sleep
Date: Wed, 15 Jul 2020 20:30:47 +0300
I have opened tramp connection, then I put computer to sleep, after few
hours I open the notebook and then as it is not connected to Internet,
it starts with these messages. When message appears, I cannot really do
nothing, so I cannot do M-x, and whatever I press, it starts running
again something from Tramp and I need to press maybe hundred times C-g
to abort these messages, basically there is no abort, and Emacs becomes
not responsive, as whatever I do,, it gives me these messages.

It does happens repeatedly and I cannot do M-x
tramp-cleanup-this-connection, so messages are useless.

Tramp is a library, and it isn't activated on its own. So let's see why
it is called:

Well, `desktop-auto-save' is in progress, and it calls Tramp functions
again and again. You should suppress this when the remote connection
isn't available.

What are your values of `desktop-buffers-not-to-save',
`desktop-files-not-to-save' and `desktop-modes-not-to-save'?

Best regards, Michael.

Looks normal. Well, could you please set tramp-verbose to 10, and
provoke the problem again? There shall be a Tramp debug buffer, which
includes backtraces. Maybe we see something there.

Don't despair, the debug buffer will be huge. You might send it directly
to me as attachment, w/o Cc.

I cannot easily reproduce.

How do I turn off desktop-auto-save? Variable is not there to
customize.

Computer was put to sleep many times, it can even be I was reporting
from other computer but this one. It was regular error after sleep. So
I turned off desktop-save

I can observe that after laptop sleep I cannot access new ssh
sessions, I get this:

Listing directory failed but ‘access-file’ worked. Debugger is not
opening on that.

This may not be related to desktop-save-mode

However, even if I do tramp-cleanup-all-connections I cannot access
SSH Tramp.

OK, so it sounds unlikely that we'll make further progress on this bug,
and I'm closing this bug report.

This sounds like a different bug -- if you're still seeing that one,

Bug could be archived or otherwise taged but not closed. As the issue
is not closed by its definition. The workflow to close the bug just
because there is no more information about that does not necessarily
solve the issue.

Problem is in the desktop-save that does something that I cannot
easily and speedy replicate. When desktop-save is turned on, and
computer goes to sleep, after some unknown time that starts
happening. As I am busy I do not test malfunction as it disturbs the
work. But I could try again.

I got impression only that those were related as messages came
together.

By the way I am using Emacs in interrupted way all the time, you may
be lucky having it all nice and good, not so on my side. We are
debugging memory leak and getting mtraces takes days. It happens in
working instance, not in empty running Emacs session. If I start
turning on desktop-mode and notebook sleep there are too many things
at once to handle and observe.

Don't close my bugs if they are not solved.

The purpose of the Emacs bug tracker is to help Emacs development, not
for users to keep track of their problems. If it seems unlikely that
there'll be progress on a bug report, it's closed.

And like I said, if further progress can be made, respond to the report
at that time, and we'll reopen.

As problem is not personal it is reported to developers. I am am
somebody with good intentions to try to find the cause of that problem
and one month is not enough.

Development have made to me a strange policy to "close" something what
is not really closed just because reporter does not follow up or
cannot replicate it. Instead of swiping the dirt under the carpet
maybe you should flag the message somehow as "unsolved" rather than
closed. It gives false statistics and impression as it was not really
"closed".

Whatever.

I will definitely try to invoke that bug again.

The ones that are solved are marked as "fixed". (Well, in theory. We
don't actually care.)

I think you misunderstand what the point of a bug tracker and bug triage
is. "Closed" is just a status, like any other, and it means "it's
unlikely that we'll make more progress here".

That is what I mean.

No, I probably did not understand it as good. Thank you.
