Using a different tags program

To add a comment to this bug, you must first unarchive it, by sending
a message to control AT debbugs.gnu.org, with unarchive 45013 in the body.
You can then email your comments to 45013 AT debbugs.gnu.org in the normal way.

There doesn't seem to be a way for the user to configure a different ctags
program, unless I'm overlooking something? Passing "CTAGS=foo" to configure
has no effect; it seems that all one can do is pass "CTAGS=foo" to make
every time one runs "make tags".

    There doesn't seem to be a way for the user to configure a different
    ctags program

I don't know of anything to the contrary. So ... would you be up for
making a patch to support it :)? Etags too, I guess? At least they seem

I have looked into it and attach a trivial patch, which works nicely.

It's not obvious to me whether any documentation is required; I rather
expected that these variables would behave like others (CC, CXX etc.). I've
actually struggled to find other variables which work similarly. CYGPATH_W
does, but it's not documented at all.

Yeah. The existing Tags node was rather inconsistent about mentioning
the various variables. I took the opportunity to tweak the text
there, and committed it all together (hope you don't mind).

BTW, it seems you reversed which file got which change (and it's tags.am
not tags.m4). I just changed the text around.
