Subject: 28.0.5; emacs build fails with undefined reference to malloc_info
Date: Sat, 14 Aug 2021 19:26:12 +0545
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Hello,
Recently while building emacs from source in void-linux using musl libc,
the make program exits saying undefined reference to malloc_info.

Using git-bisect, i've found that the problem started with commit
621bb79b7044dcc277386eb7338c0eb1e08c29c7 `New debugging command
'malloc-info''
This commit was introduced in 2020 Nov 10

The problem is present in the HEAD as of 2021 Aug 11 with commit
244acc5a057b0d6ff03754af14d71808b6f20233 `Replace some `string-match-p'
calls in Tramp'

I beleive the problem exists because i'm using musl libc and not glibc.

Two build logs have been attached which were created using similar
technique:

git checkout -b first 621bb79b70
make 2&> ../make_emacs_621bb79

(the second log with commit 244acc5a).
These command was executed in bash.

For any additional information, i will try to reply with this email
address but since this one is unreliable at times, i hope that replying
through newsgroup is okay.

Does musl define some preprocessor macro that we could use to
condition that function's compilation?

Hello Eli,

I've just tested and can say that, at least for a system with similar
conditions, the __unix__ is defined. Although i'm not sure if this is a
standared macro of either C or POSIX or any other systems.

Thank you for your hard work!

I think musl, on purpose, doesn't define anything to allow us to
identify that we're using it?

https://wiki.musl-libc.org/faq.html

Or I may be misunderstanding something.

But if that's the case, we have to just test explicitly for malloc_info
in configure.ac...

Yes. Or we could use something to single out glibc, if there is such
a macro.

There is __GLIBC__... I wondered whether musl defined that (I thought I
vaguely remembered reading something about that), but I can't find it
now. So testing for that should be OK.

birdsite <at> airmail.cc, can you try the following trivial patch and see
whether that allows you to compile Emacs again?

Thank you larsi! the patch works and the initial compilation is
fine. The build log is attached below. Although now i'm getting a new
error such as:

LC_ALL=C ./temacs -batch  -l loadup --temacs=pdump
Loading loadup.el (source)...
dump mode: pdump
...
Loading files.el (source)...
(require pcase) while preparing to dump

Thanks!

Hm! Very odd -- whether it loads pcase or not shouldn't depend on
whether you're using musl or not, I'd have thought. Is this with an
unmodified, fresh Emacs checkout?

Sorry, that was with the commit with message `New debugging command
'malloc-info''. I can say that this one existed before malloc_info was
introduced as i had seen it when bisecting the code.

I've now tested it with these commands and the build still fails.

first case:

git pull origin
git checkout testing
git reset --hard HEAD
git pull # pulls from local master
make 2&> ../make-emacs-aug-15-head

This one fails with some segmentation fault.

seeing some warnings about newer source files being newer, i did
a make bootstrap (because make clean produced same errors) and it now
fails with different errors. this one seems to be even more weird.

make bootstrap 2&> ../make-bootstrap-aug-15-head

(4 lines about make errors)

Before doing both of these, i had done a git bisect with the following
(with HEAD pointing to commit with `New debugging command
'malloc-info'')

git bisect start HEAD emacs-27.2-rc2 --

whoose output (after 1 compilation) was:

The merge base f5d7fb3a2dee3f9ae49151e3d01483aad7fb734b is bad.
This means the bug has been fixed between
f5d7fb3a2dee3f9ae49151e3d01483aad7fb734b and
[deef5efafb70f4b171265b896505b92b6eef24e6].

i don't know how much of it is relevant so decided to include it all.

Hope it helps.

It's finding old .elc files, so this is not a clean tree. Try saying
"make bootstrap" and see what happens then.

That's even weirder, because that a bug that was fixed a long time ago.

I don't know what's going on in your tree, but just as a sanity check:
Can you try to just do

git clone git://git.savannah.gnu.org/emacs.git
cd emacs
make

and see what happens?

Run the failing command under GDB and show the backtrace from the
segfault.

(To see which command fails, say "make V=1".)
