I have the impression this build is necessary to get documentation
completion working in emacs/geiser and am working up from downstream errors.

Hum, have you modified the checkout?  Because this error:

    ice-9/eval.scm:293:34: no code for module (sExplorer Excluderfi srfi-35)

looks really weird.

This looks weird, what is "Explorer Excluder"? It's definitely not in
gnu.scm.
