From: Christopher Howard <christopher <at> librehacker.com> To: bug-guix <at> gnu.org Subject: gdm non-responsive Date: Tue, 06 May 2025 21:10:17 -0800
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Hello. I upgraded one of my systems today after not upgrading it for around six months. The boot process seems to go normally, but when I get to gdm to login, gdm is non-responsive. The mouse cursor moves, but trying to press buttons or menus has no effect. I can still switch to the virtual terminals, login there, and run software like Emacs in the terminal.

It's support slow/barely usable in QEMU unless using OpenGL support for example. -- Thanks, Maxim

My gfx card is very old, so there could be issues there I suppose, though it does support OpenGL and in the past I've used it for 3D gaming like Warzone2000. Every time I do a guix upgrade, another 3D game stops working, or has issues. -- Christopher Howard

I'm not sure about that, my experience is that at times new kernel introduced regressions with my previously dated GPU (nvidia 8800 GTS), but otherwise it was reliable. There is a bug about mesa loading cached compiled shaders from a previous version that crashes it, but I don't think that's related here. Also, the GDM saved files are kept on a tmpfs because in the past ownership issues would break logins. A reboot would cure this, if that's the issue. Otherwise, you'll need to gather more data about what is going wrong perhaps by visiting TTY1 (Control + Alt + F1), or logging in TTY2 and reading /var/log/messages or 'dmesg'. There's also /var/log/gdm/*. If switching TTY doesn't work, consider enabling SSH and connecting to the machine remotely to retrieve the logs. -- Thanks, Maxim

There's also /var/log/gdm/*. Are these files attached to my original bug report? I thought I attached them already. As mentioned, gdm becomes non-responsive in the sense that none of the gdm buttons or menus can be activated or manipulated. The screen appears frozen. However, I can still move the mouse pointer around, like X is still working. Also, I can switch to any of the virtual terminals and log into them. In fact, right now I am writing this e-mail using Emacs running in a virtual terminal. -- Christopher Howard

I've now taken a look at them, and can't see anything standing out. > As mentioned, gdm becomes non-responsive in the sense that none of the > gdm buttons or menus can be activated or manipulated. Perhaps gdm has regressed with Xorg, given it's not that common a setup anymore where GDM is typically used (GNOME) ? Do you know of a way to reproduce the issue, e.g. using a virtual machine? I looked for upstream issues, and saw a few reports of hangs, but nothing that happens systematically like yours with your specific setup [0]. Hi, I gave up and switched to SLIM + Mate, which is working for me. It doesn't feel worth more of my time to troubleshoot GDM on this computer, which mainly I use just for checking my e-mail. So I'm going to close this bug. -- Christopher Howard
