Happy GNU year! (EmacsBells ringing...)
GNUstep has supported named images for 10 years already; see the bug
linked from src/nsterm.m:1226. That's a very old release that
basically nobody is using; latest GNUstep releases are easily
buildable on fairly old systems.
I'm not sure what is the policy for required minimum GNUstep versions,
but anyway, the attached patch makes sure to use the fallback
implementation only in case the needed symbol is missing.
