Please feel free to move it wherever is suits you; it should only change
the commit hashes and not the derivations anyway.

Okay, so if I understand correctly, these hashes should simply be
dropped for the world-rebuild before merging? Please do so then, I think
we do not expect problems to occur (and if they do, we will have to see
on a case by case basis).

Argh, I just now see that the branch again failed to be evaluated!
But I do not see an error message. So I have just rebased once more
and we will see whether it succeeds now. And kde-team has also not
started its builds...

That commit is the one I want to see, I'd just personally place it
elsewhere in the series.  (Particularly towards the start of the series
between gnutls and openssl).

Well, it certainly wasn't before you fixed fontconfig, but I made the
existence of those patches clear in the initial announcement.  These
are workarounds for my machine, which uses an unprivileged guix daemon,
to get particular packages to build despite known issues.  These are
not patches addressing otherwise blocking issues for gnome-team.

Sorry, I do not understand what you mean by "bootstrap order". I have just
pushed a branch that contains the changes as I imagined them, with the two
fontconfig patches squashed at HEAD - our previous fontconfig versions
was 2.14.0, not 2.16.0; so I have essentially kept Maxim's modernising
changes, but used git-download, made an upgrade to 2.16.0 instead of
2.16.2, and kept the names as before. So with this change, we go from
2.14.0 from March 2022 to 2.16.0 from January 2025.

If this is not what you imagined, please feel free to modify the HEAD
commit, or to drop it, or to work from Maxim's original commit that is
still around on the gnome-team.bak branch.

Hm, are you saying that gnome-team is not yet in its final stage?
Then I think it does not have its place in the QA queue - my assumption
was that we expect to do exactly *one* build of the branch. With four
other branches waiting and more shaping up, it is not reasonable to
monopolise the bordeaux build farm for maybe a week to do the
world-rebuild if we are not confident to be able to merge afterwards.
In that case, you can use the much more powerful berlin build farm with CI
to look at the shape of the branch before making the merge request when
everything looks good.

I would suggest the following: Move the "offending" commit to the top
(hoping that changing the order works); this is not really necessary,
but would make it easier to modify it.

Then for the time being, modify the commit to update fontconfig to 2.16.0
only instead of 2.16.2, which allows us to keep the tarball download.
And revert the name change, since fontconfig-minimal clearly was a
mistake.

Then in another world-rebuild round (which may or may not be gnome-team),
we can apply https://codeberg.org/guix/guix/pulls/6627 or a similar
correction to be able to go to a newer fontconfig.

This branch has 25000 (!) rebuilds, and contains quite a few changes, so
I hope we will not see other problems surfacing. I will leave kde-team
in front of it, normally its about 500 rebuilds should go through until
tomorrow.

So if you disagree with my proposed changes, you can still speak up
until tomorrow so that we implement a different solution.

^ This could be the problem, presumably this creates a cycle when Guix
computes derivations without using the git-download builtin.

The data service currently has the derivations computed without this
builtin for backwards compatability, since the autodetection of the
builtin doesn't work when the intention is to allow building those
derivations on different machines.

You can test this in the repl, it should look something like this, but
when you do similarly on gnome-team, guix will eat all your memory:

$ ./pre-inst-env guix repl

Actually I do not quite believe the hypothesis - the only package of
which the name is changed in the commit is the user facing
fontconfig-with-documentation, which is not used internally.

It looks relatively harmless, although I think it contains a small error
compared to what it claims to do. Indeed, it leaves the package name of
the variable fontconfig as "fontconfig-minimal", then drops the name
field of the variable fontconfig-with-documentation and thus keeps the
inherited name as "fontconfig-minimal". So there is no variable anymore
with name "fontconfig". From the commit description, I suppose that the
goal instead was that both variables have the name "fontconfig".

Could this cause problems somewhere else in the codebase?
$ ./pre-inst-env guix build --derivations fontconfig-minimal
$ ./pre-inst-env guix build --derivations -e '(@ (gnu packages fontutils) fontconfig)'
both succeed.

I suppose it can cause problems. If I understand correctly, then our
"new" label-less inputs implicitly have as label the string of their
name field. Then expressions such as
   (assoc-ref inputs "fontconfig")
   #$(this-package-input "fontconfig-minimal")
(both appear in our packages) can fail; in our case the first one should
fail, but if we standardise on "fontconfig" as name, then the second one
will fail. The two packages where I see the first construction still use
explicit labels, and their derivations build.

So my hypothesis may be wrong, but I will give it a try by adding a
commit reverting the name change. We will see what happens.

Given that ci.guix.gnu.org did build the branches for a long while and
the bisect appears to be moving further and further to the root of the
branch, I do think this is a data service problem, but I can't get to

The same problem occurs with kde-team now... I start to wonder whether
the problem is with the data service or with the branches. On the other

Hello all,

rust-team is merged, and my bisecting of the gnome-team branch advances
well (three more steps to go).

In the meantime, if the tooling works as planned, I have catapulted
kde-team to the front of the queue: It appears to be ready, and
hopefully will be a small and smooth experience that could go through in
a day or two. So please do not push any updates to the branch except for
repairing breakage that will be seen during the build. If there is too
much breakage, I may demote it to the back of the queue again.

But hopefully we will make nice progress on these branches!

The problem is mystifying me, so I will give it a try; which can only
work if nobody else pushes to the branch. To be on the safe side, I have
created a copy as gnome-team.bak. But since it is not the only thing
I am doing right now, and every evaluation on data.qa can take a few
hours, do not hold your breath...

I have just now rebased gnome-team, just so that we keep up to date with
master (three merge conflicts related to rust!).

But this does not solve the fundamental problem - I am convinced there
is a problematic commit hidden somewhere inside the branch.

The only way of debugging this is by "git bisect" - then pushing the
checked out "middle" commit and letting data.qa try to evaluate the
branch. For 200 commits, this should take 7 trials.

Is some committer from the Gnome team interested in giving it a try?

Or do you spot suspicious commits? I am a bit wary about the package
moves to gnome-circle with the left-behind public alias, although it
should be safe with "(@".

I found a bug in the upower definition that I've sent a patch for
(https://codeberg.org/guix/guix/pulls/6472), I don't know if that could
cause an issue but I'll help take a look.

After the go-team merge I have rebased again. QA had trouble evaluating
the previous branch, but I could pull from it; so I wonder whether this
was not just a transient problem with the data service. Hopefully the
branch will be built now. It appears on CI with lots of build failures;
if this is confirmed, we should let rust-team go to the front.

after the r-team merge this is now second in line.
I have rebased the branch on master and may rebase once more on a commit
evaluated by the data service.

There were two merge conflicts, one update of gnome-music that was
superseded by a newer update and could be dropped, and an addition of
rust crates, which I resolved by keeping each and every crate around.

Hi,

just earlier today, I pushed a rebase along with GNOME 48.8 onto gnome-
team.  I would like to hereby move the branch into "bugfixing" mode,
effectively meaning that I don't plan to do yet another world rebuild
on it before merging it to master.  (In the context of gnome-team, a
world rebuild is anything that would lead to webkitgtk being rebuilt.)

While other pending merges are being handled, I'd like to iron out some
bugs.  There are four patches labelled WORKAROUND, whose proper
handling is allowed to bypass the aforementioned world rebuild ban.=20
These=C2=A0address differences in the privileged vs. unpriviledged daemon
use case and will be stripped at some later point just before the
actual merge if unaddressed.  Apart from those, I want to receive:
- critical bug reports
- non-critical bug reports
- minor version updates that don't cause world rebuilds
- UX/QoL improvements

I will also keep rebasing gnome-team onto master as I already have a
number of times to keep it fresh.  Feel free to check out the branch,
wait for CI to build Rust, Webkit and all the other large packages, and
try out GNOME 48 in a VM.
