Minor R updates are usually pretty painless. I fetch the new
tarball, compute the hash, then update the version and the hash of
"r-with-tests". I build it with
./pre-inst-env guix build -K -e '(@@ (gnu packages statistics)
r-with-tests)'
When this works fine I run
./pre-inst-env guix build --no-grafts --rounds=2 -K r-minimal
to be sure that the package is still reproducible. (In the past
we've had at most a single byte difference in a generated
DESCRIPTION file.)
I often built all R packages on my laptop, but it probably makes
more sense to let ci.guix.gnu.org take care of this by pushing the
update to the r-team branch and watch the result of the "r-team"
jobset.
Prior to the upgrade I usually make sure that all CRAN and
Bioconductor packages are up-to-date. This requires much more
work because the updater/importer is not perfect and erases some
important input modifications, or it adds too many native inputs.
I use these commands to get started:
./pre-inst-env guix refresh -t cran -u
./pre-inst-env guix refresh -t bioconductor -u
Then I walk through the hunks in magit and discard changes that
are obviously bad. Then I run "make" to see if there are any
references to packages that don't exist. I commit newly added
packages first. Then I run something like this to build the
modified packages:
make && git diff | grep '^ (define-public' | cut -d' ' -f 3 |
xargs -n400 -P1 ./pre-inst-env guix build --cores=2
--keep-going
Any package that requires changes to the arguments or properties
fields is committed manually. For all the others I run
./etc/committer.scm and check the commits before pushing to the
r-team branch.
