I guess you misunderstood. They are unpleasant when marking lots of false positives. Of course the face should be very visible so that I recognize (real) mistakes. The relation to this bug report is that for `flyspell-prog-mode' it is possible to decide whether comments should be checked (but only by changing a variable in a way that produces a warning -> back to start). If we want a variant of Flyspell for markup languages, we should add it -- this is basically what I proposed. The advantages are: it will be less kludgey, and it will be more discoverable. You want a different flavor of Flyspell, one that is suited to text with markup (TeX, HTML, Markdown, Texinfo, etc.). OTOH I don't understand what the benefit of the restricting the binding to to a subset of three given faces is. The warning might catch a typo, ok. But getting a warning every time I open the document is annoying. The implementation of `flyspell-prog-mode' might be a bit naive. But it is not dangerous or harmful, and actually, the interface it offers might be exactly what a lot of people want or expect. At this moment I have no idea what a rewrite would do differently in a fundamental way. And it works okish. We can still improve the situation for LaTeX in a different way. Fine by me, really. But `flyspell-prog-mode' will probably still have its use cases for that the subject of this report is relevant. Michael.

I agree it might not be desirable to add those elements globally, but they do make sense file-locally. Allowing the user to input any symbol there seems okay to me. There's the value :all of enable-local-variables, yes? Anyway, I'm surprised you agree to go with such inelegant solutions. This use case is clearly outside of flyspell-prog-mode's design space, so adding another Flyspell variant that does fit these use cases sounds much cleaner to me. Hacks and kludges are okay as local solutions, but here we are asked to officially embrace such a kludge. And that's even before we talk about discoverability, which basically will be nonexistent for others who'd want to do the same.

nil *is* a valid `face` property value.
I was thinking of a patch like the one below. It's a bit less
convenient UI-wise and lets you specify "suboptimal" values like
(font-lock-string-face font-lock-string-face font-lock-string-face)
but I expect that there aren't very many users setting this var via
the Custom UI, so it's a small price to pay.

A new variant of flyspell would make more sense, IMO.

Because flyspell-prog-text-faces is supposed to spell-check the corresponding portions of the program's source. How is flyspell-prog-mode useful if you set that variable to nil? doesn't that basically make flyspell-prog-mode identical to flyspell-mode? Also, if you want to tweak flyspell-prog-mode this way, why not use setq instead of setopt? That option doesn't have any :set function, so the only reason to use setopt is to check the validity of the value, which you don't like, so... And if all of the above is not enough, and you still insist, I could agree to adding nil to the valid values (but then please suggest a suitable :tag), but allowing any symbol is IMO too dangerous, especially as we use cl-flet there. when editing .tex files having nil in `flyspell-prog-text-faces' is
useful (even necessary) for flyspell-prog-mode doing its job.
But when using `setopt' (via file variable!) Emacs barfs about the type
not matching. The type spec of the option is much too restrictive IMO:

predicates).
