With the substring completion style there is a regression when
completing after slash.

1. emacs -Q
2. (setq completion-styles '(substring))
3. M-x shell
4. cd / <TAB>

This completes to "cd //". One can even add more slashes by pressing
<right> TAB <right> TAB <right> TAB which yields "cd /////". This has
not happened in Emacs 29 and older. On Emacs 29 the string "/" was not
expanded to "//".

The change of behavior was introduced by commit
0fbba16387513e7692b46885833e4a9c218251f0 (Preserve an explicit * in
pcm-try-completion).

In GNU Emacs 31.1.50 (build 1, x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version
