Ugh. Outlook is still putting this stuff in iCalendar data nearly
*twenty years* after the RFC was standardized? (Or is Kerio Connect
something totally unrelated...?) I saw examples like this in the old
code but was assuming it dated from the pre-RFC5545 era...

> Richard, how can we make Emacs more lenient in these cases?

I'd prefer not to special-case this sort of thing in the parser itself.

Instead, the new hook `icalendar-pre-parsing-hook' is meant to help
users deal with non-compliant implementations like this. Stefan, you
can install a function there that will replace those non-standard TZIDs
with something the parser won't balk at -- e.g. I think if you replace
", " with "/" it should be fine, or just escape the commas with
`icalendar-escape-text-in-region'.

If enough people have this problem then we can add a function to
icalendar-parser.el to clean up these MS-style TZIDs, and suggest it as
a possible value for `icalendar-pre-parsing-hook' in Custom. There are
already several such functions; see the "Pre-parsing cleanup" section in
icalendar-parser.el.

Best,
Richard

Thank you for your report. Did you report this bug to whoever
maintains Kerio Connect? If not, please do.

Richard, how can we make Emacs more lenient in these cases?

Hi,

Emacs version: GNU Emacs 31.1 (build 1, aarch64-apple-darwin27.0.0, NS appkit-2775.10 Version 27.0.1 (Build 26A434))
 of 2026-09-29

Accepting a meeting invitation in Gnus fails with this error:

icalendar-ast-node-valid-children-p: Invalid iCalendar data: ...
"iCalendar `icalendar-vtimezone' node must contain exactly one `icalendar-tzid'"

The attached invitation comes from Kerio Connect ("Outlook Connector").
Its VTIMEZONE uses the Windows timezone name with unescaped commas:

TZID:Amsterdam, Belgrade, Berlin, Brussels, Budapest, Madrid,
  Paris, Prague, Stockholm

RFC 5545, section 3.3.11, requires commas in TEXT values to be escaped,
so the input is invalid. But the sender cannot fix this, Outlook-style
timezone names are common in business mail, and Emacs 30.1 accepted
them.

Attached are a sample ICS and a lisp file to reproduce the problem with

   emacs -Q --batch -l check-ics.el broken-ics.txt

Emacs 30.1 says "Accept: OK", Emacs 31.1 says:

"Parse: OK, start 2026-10-05 14:30:00 +0200, end 2026-10-05 16:30:00 +0200
Accept: FAILED: (icalendar-validation-error[...]"

I can test a patch if that helps.

Thanks,
Stefan.
