Perhaps `^' should disable the Agent or something?

As I mentioned in http://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/bugreport.cgi?bug=9075#11 I
think it's pretty easy to corrupt Gnus' caches and when that happens,
almost anything can be the result, but it's seldom pretty ;-)

I can make a guess about this part: `gnus-summary-refer-parent-article'
(^) searches for an article with a specific Message-ID. According to
Dave, gmail has somehow modified the message-id so the article isn't
found. But `gnus-summary-refer-thread' (A T) is different. It constructs
a query that includes all articles that /refer/ to this message-id
(among others). So if gmail has screwed up the message-id of the parent
article, but not the message-ids in the references of articles that
refer to it, this would explain the behavior.

But the agent issue still baffles me. Unless somehow its the interaction
of the agent with gmail that causes the problem? Could the message
downloaded by the agent have the wrong message-id and the version left
on the server still be OK

It turns out that if I de-agentize the server, the message is found
without problems. I'm happy to help debug this problem in any way I
can.

I have this one (IMAP) email message at the root of a thread that's
causing trouble. If I do an nnir search for its `Message-Id' header
value (with `nnir-imap-default-search-key' set to either the default, or
to imap) with an appropriately-formatted query), I can find all the
messages in the same thread *except* the one whose Message-Id I've
supplied. If I try to use `^' (`gnus-summary-refer-parent-article')
to get to that message, Gnus tells me:

  Couldn't fetch article
  <C62FCCA7AC4C154A9CE93D235C3488B906AA87BB98@HIDDEN>

However, if I then do `A T' (`gnus-summary-refer-thread'), the articles
in the summary buffer turn from unmarked to marked (with various read
marks) *and* the parent article shows up.

Can anyone help explain/fix this behavior?

BTW, when I try to server-side search for that Message-Id using
Wanderlust or Thunderbird, it is found without any trouble.
