Subject: Improved method for shell directory tracking

Package: emacs
Severity: wishlist

An Emacs shell buffer needs to know the shell's PWD so that eg
completion can work correctly. The default shell-directory-tracker
watches for standard commands like cd, pushd, popd. It fails to handle
non-standard commands for changing directories; eg ".." as an
alias/function meaning "cd ../", etc.

dirtrack.el provides an alternative, but requires the full PWD to appear
in the prompt.

Is it possible to come up with a third way that is better than these?

Emacs 29 has this via `comint-osc-directory-tracker', which is on by
default. I think that's probably as good as it's going to get, so I'm
therefore closing this bug report.
