I don't know. But it doesn't sound something that cannot be expected
from other modes, given what we do with temporary buffers.

But IME it is futile in Emacs to do something about bugs that were
never reported.

Yes, the Org connection was missing.

This bug report is about global-whitespace-mode unconditionally ignoring
all the buffers named like *...* and *notes* buffer created by
remember.el in particular. The same problem also happens with Org mode
and its code editing buffers named *Org Src [<lang name>]*.

My question is simple: is it only whitespace-mode that is doing
something special with *...* buffers or are there any others? If there
are, similar bugs will likely occur there.

> Sorry, you lost me. Starting where you say that "Org mode will have

I hope that the above makes things more clear.

What about them?

Sorry, you lost me. Starting where you say that "Org mode will have
to add dedicated code to handle whitespace-mode in order to solve this
bug report fully".

That one I know. What about names that begin with "*"?

If there is new customization specific to whitespace-mode, Org mode will
have to add dedicated code to handle whitespace-mode in order to solve
this bug report fully. But what if *Org Src ...* buffers are also
handled unexpectedly elsewhere in Emacs? Then Org mode will need to add
more and more special handling. So, I thought that it may be a good idea
to find all the potential problematic scenarios. Maybe I can do
something more universal than just fixing whitespace-mode; then some
other mode, and so on.

Yes, for example we do some special things in buffers whose names
begin with a space.

Btw, I didn't say that the patches I will welcome are not
customizations, so I'm not sure what exactly in my message triggered
this.

I think we are talking past each other. I do not mean customizations
altering Emacs behavior for buffers with specific name. I mean instances
like in whitespace-mode with

;; ...the buffer is not special (name starts with *)
         (or (not (eq (aref (buffer-name) 0) ?*))
             ...)

Is there any other place in Emacs where buffers starting with "*..." are
unconditionally treated differently from normal buffers?

(I know that special treatment is very common for buffers with name
starting with space, but I am not aware about "*...")

special-display-buffer-names comes to mind.

And it doesn't have to be the _name_ of a buffer, it could be some
other attribute, like the major-mode.

Patches to add a user option that allows to make exceptions for more
than just *scratch* will be welcome.

Thanks.

=20
Hello Emacs Maintainers, global-whitespace-mode does not enable=20
whitespace-mode in remember-notes-buffer-name buffer. This=20
happens because whitespace-enable-predicate prevents=20
whitespace-mode from activating in buffers whose names start with=20
=E2=80=98*=E2=80=99, with only *scratch* being an
exception. While it makes sense for buffers like *Messages* or
*Ibuffer*, it unintentionally affects remember-notes-buffer-name
buffers, which should likely be treated similarly to *scratch*.

Steps to reproduce:

emacs -Q

M-x global-whitespace-mode
M-x remember-notes
C-h v whitespace-mode

Value of whitespace-mode is nil, indicating whitespace-mode is not
enabled in the remember-notes-buffer-name buffer

Thank you for your time!
